The 21st Century Citizen. How do we Get Involved Today?

For the past ten years my partner at qmedia solutions and I have been doing a lot of pro bono work for a number of not-for-profits and charities. We've really enjoyed it but we wanted to do more. First we wanted to tell stories about some of the amazing people who had inspired us. And so we started with TV storytelling and on October 26th Get Involved had it's World Premiere on TVO-- Ontario's premiere public broadcaster. So far we have produced 25 profiles of amazing innovators, social entrepreneurs and activists. Take a look at our stories. Tell us what you think. Tell us about people or organizations that inspire you. During our research we sensed a growing movement growing all around us-- people realizing their skills and their expertise can be used not only to bring them financial rewards but deeper connection and meaning in their lives. And so our next step was to concieve of a website that would transform the inspiration of the television profiles and help propell people into action and Getinvolved.ca was born. Peggie and Softchoice

A couple of days ago the crew and I (the usual suspects: Matt and Matt – but this time also with producer Shayna Haddon and PA/photographer Angela Besharah) went to check out the Part 2 to the Peggie Pelosi story, and like most things of a Get Involved nature, the story turned out even better than we had originally thought.

Peggie sent us to Softchoice – a huge international software and solutions-oriented company. Head office in Toronto was our destination and Nick Foster (VP of Mergers and Acquisitions) was our focus. Nick was the connection between Peggie and his company and staff. He’d brought her in to hear her ideas on Corporate Karma and finding them to reflect quite perfectly his own, decided to open the idea up company-wide. The result: a special board of employees who have chosen to use their skills and sweat and the basic components of Softchoice to mount several trips to Uganda to bring computer labs and equipment and training to the children in the surrounding villages. This is an important part of Corporate Karma – not just doing good, but applying what it is your company does to problems outside oneself.

I already knew what they did – and what they were going to do (they were leaving for Uganda the very next day and were putting together packages of clothes and toys and medical and hygiene supplies to take with them to distribute along with the computery stuff; one of the staff going – Melissa – is a Frisbee champ in real life… she plans to bring the competitive sport to the children of Uganda!) but I had no idea how much they would all be loving it! Their enthusiasm and excitement were infectious – and their commitment to doing the best possible job they could was inspiring. Nick himself was going too and bringing his teenage daughter, who herself had raised thousands of dollars to bring to the children.

That’s the thing about infections… you just can’t keep them bottled up!
