The 21st Century Citizen. How do we Get Involved Today?

For the past ten years my partner at qmedia solutions and I have been doing a lot of pro bono work for a number of not-for-profits and charities. We've really enjoyed it but we wanted to do more. First we wanted to tell stories about some of the amazing people who had inspired us. And so we started with TV storytelling and on October 26th Get Involved had it's World Premiere on TVO-- Ontario's premiere public broadcaster. So far we have produced 25 profiles of amazing innovators, social entrepreneurs and activists. Take a look at our stories. Tell us what you think. Tell us about people or organizations that inspire you. During our research we sensed a growing movement growing all around us-- people realizing their skills and their expertise can be used not only to bring them financial rewards but deeper connection and meaning in their lives. And so our next step was to concieve of a website that would transform the inspiration of the television profiles and help propell people into action and Getinvolved.ca was born. Part II...

There’s usually a “Part 2” to every story we do. We focus on an individual who is in the process of changing the world (Part 1) and then we go out and find that change (be it a person or a place or an activity) and fold it seamlessly into the story . (Part 2!)

Today we met the Part 1 of our story on Peggie Pelosi. Which would of course be Peggie!

Peggie is a fascinating woman. For years a top salesperson both in Canada and the USA, Peggie had one of those famous “light bulb moments” when she took her children (5 children – all boys!) to Africa to see what life was like outside privileged North America. It was by all accounts a stunning experience for all. It was in fact where Peggie decided she had to follow her calling – up until then a slightly shyer voice, now a loud booming bellow!

Peggie had been involved in aligning the company she then worked for with a cause that reflected the employee’s interests (helping people in the third world) and pulling them altogether to make change. The change wasn’t just in the places the company chose to share their caring – it was in the company itself. By pulling together all these people in a cause for good, the people and the overall organization pulled together in every way. Sales went through the roof and the company stock hit an all time high.

The bellow that Peggie heard was her calling telling her that THIS (the aligning, not the sales) was her calling, and that to answer she would leave her company and start her own – consulting to other companies and corporations on how to do good… to do better.

She’s been doing it now for several years and the results have exceeded her expectations. Orenda Connections has changed the face and the heart of many a company, making the same sorts of connections (and change for good by giving back) that she herself experienced at her old job. She wrote a book about it – it’s called Corporate Karma. You should read it. Better still, you should try it.

I’ll tell you about Part 2 next time…
